EC-Council CEH Certification

The Certified Ethical Hacker v9.. what a prestigious name, should have turned me away but it didn’t. I wanted it because it was a “check the box” activity.. many companies and contracts are looking for this on your resume so I figured why not. In the end the content was extremely similar to the CompTIA Sec+, except with a few additional typos on the exam.

I studied for this one from January through June, so about six months. I actually signed up for a 5 day online training camp through GreyCampus, which my company paid for. However, I would not recommend it. The instructor had an extremely heavy accent and mostly just read off the slides, clearly just following the instructions during the “lab” portions as well. The course included the EC-Council labs (which were actually somewhat helpful) and exam, and another side benefit was I didn’t have to prove how many years I have been in the InfoSec industry.

I studied for this one by reading the official EC-Council slides for the CEH, doing the labs, reading a few books and listening to some videos while driving to and from work.

The main resources I used to study:

  1. EC-Council slides, available if you pay for any course that is affiliated with EC-Council.
  2. CEH iLabs, came with the class – https://ilabs.eccouncil.org/
  3. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) Version 9 Cert Guide, Second Edition by Micheal Gregg – ISBN: 9780134680842
  4. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) – Hacking Users and Their Devices – video by Chad Russell
  5. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH): Platform Penetration – video by Chad Russell
  6. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) – video by iCollege
  7. This review guide I used right before the exam – CEH Study Guide
  8. A lot of good questions here, but you’ll get some duplicates, and some incorrect answers. Be sure to Google it if the given answer seems fishy. https://ceh.cagy.org/
  9. Two reddit posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/CEH/comments/4vz2ie/easily_passed_and_you_can_too/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/CEH/comments/7dyr13/passed_the_ceh_heres_how/

Other random things to memorize:

  • Data Execution Prevention and User Account Control on Windows 10, know what they do and what the differences are
  • Know which one is faster: symmetric or asymmetric encryption
  • CHNTPW, do you know what it is? 🙂
  • Study up on civil and criminal offenses related to hacking

Good luck!
